Weight Loss- ARG!

Some of you may think I’m totally crazy- but I have worried about K not getting enough to eat from day 1. The day before we were discharged, I was told that if K didn’t gain weight she would be classified as “failure to thrive” and that scared the crap out of me! So ever since then, I have worried about K losing weight…
Until now, she has not lost any weight! And I finally stopped freaking out- I thought she was in a good eating pattern and I still do! She is eating about 20 oz a day of formula and then she get about 130-160 calories from regular food a day! All of that (calorie wise) is about the same if not more than what she used to take in a day.
And yet today- K went to get her second RSV shot- which they weigh them for… and she lost 1.4 oz since her last appt two weeks ago! The ped. said she wasn’t too concerned… but really- two weeks ago- K should have been a couple of oz UP !! Not DOWN!! So yes, I am very frustrated..
Our kids have enough problems… feeding issues is one of them, and a really frustrating one! And I really thought we were in a good place right now as I’ve mentioned.. so I’m just frustrated on how she lost weight- I know weight gain slows down- and I’m ok with that… it’s just two weeks – some gain should have taken place. K has another appt on the 18th (her 9 month wellness visit) and they said they’d check again. I took a half day to go to that appt!
And I know this sounds like a post for my own personal blog- but I have not posted here in two weeks- and in order for this to pop up in google for people to find when they are in search of answers, I need to get the traffic flowing.. so I had to post here. Besides- weight gain/loss goes with our feeding struggles.
I just can’t believe all those times I was actually worried she didn’t gain weight- and she had- and now when I didn’t worry at all- she lost! ARG! I will not freak yet- I really, honestly feel like she is on a good track.. and if need be I guess I will add that dumb 11 o’clock feeding back into her schedule.. however I don’t think she’ll like that too much.
And this girl doesn’t eat much- I know this compared to healthy babies- but she will not eat when she doesn’t want to be fed. If I think she should be starving, and she isn’t in the mood to eat- she won’t! She isn’t anything like her mom… who eats even when she isn’t hungry! lol
Any ideas? Should I stop stressing? Or is this a good time to stress? What do you think?!
help!

Kate-
Let me reassure you some, since my Dakota is as small as they come without having to get some kind of tube, I believe. Dakota is 11 months old and 15lbs 4 or 5 oz. She weighed 5 oz on Thursday but on Sunday she weighed 3.5 oz, so their weight does fluctuate. We have a digital scale at home and I weigh Dakota before her bath every third day or so. I notice that her weight goes up and down based on what she ate and how long ago.
When we were in the hospital we barely got out of there without a g-tube! Dr. Kays won’t send you home with a NG tube for some reason so it is a g-tube or no tube. I begged them for a trial without a tube. They let me have it out for the weekend and I stayed over in the hospital and fed Dakota all her meals. Dakota only took about 80% of her volume, but she still gained weight (barely!) so we got out of there! It has always, always been a struggle to feed Dakota! But even though she doesn’t want to take what I hope she would … with my encouragement and all the tricks I can think of, she takes about the same as you listed: 20 oz per day of milk and three meals a day of solids (oatmeal and some kind of fruit or veggie), yet she is 2 months older than Kayla. I have been told by our pediatrician and Dr. Kays, that as long as Dakota follows her own growth curve, they are ok. She has always been below 0% for weight for her actual age and I think less than 5% for her adjusted age. But she parallels the growth curve so they are ok with her weight gain. Around 9 months, babies start to get much more active- I know both Kayla and Dakota are moving all around (Dakota is crawling now and pulling up on everything she can get to!) … burning up calories … so it is natural that their weight gain would slow.
However, all that said, I know exactly what you mean. Dakota’s weight and feeding are constantly on my mind, as is what Dr. Kays said to me before we left the hospital … he said, “It will most likely always be a struggle to get the proper nutrition in Dakota, but if you work very hard, she will most likely be ok without any surgical intervention.” Well, I work my very hardest (as I know you do), but at the end of the day we can only feed our babies what they are willing to eat and hope that they continue to grow … otherwise, it is on to the next trick or calorie boosting method (adding things to the formula like corn oil, higher calorie formula, feeding higher calorie foods like avocado, adding things like duocal, pediasure, etc….. I think there are ways if we really get in trouble). From my perspective, I think Kayla is doing great and am often jealous of how well she eats!
Boy, I don’t know what to say, I stress ALL of the TIME about this! Jaime has days where he eats awesome, then there’s days like today where he was satisfied with 3 oz bottles all day! UGH! I am so ready to pull my hair out, too! So far, Jaime is gaining…there was some talk of a g-tube, but I’m so anti g-tube. Not because the g-tube isn’t good, I think it’s WONDERFUL for some kids, but with Jaime being a hemophiliac, it would be yet another risky surgery that can cause a bleed. If uncontrolled, he could bleed to death, from what we all know, Jaime is the only documented CDH/hemophiliac case which puts him in a class all of his own. I’ll use the NG if need be! Jaime has his next appointment on Tues. for a weigh-in…I’ll keep my fingers crossed that Kayla gains for her 9 mos. appointment and you can keep your fingers crossed that Jaime gains by next Tuesday…deal?!?
Perhaps that’s Dr. Kay’s theory, too? I really liked him a lot, too, he just never dealt with hemophilia and CDH, nor was comfortable doing so!
At least we found an awesome team in Cincinnati!
I LOVE knowing that I’m not the only one out there stressing over this feeding stuff!!!
Oh and Jennifer, I was told that the NG actually creates oral aversions, so the less it is needed, the better the kids do overall!
Take care, girls!
